Where Do Broken Hearts Go?: My Closing remarks on Whitney Houston

“Where do broken hearts go?

Can they find their way home?

Back to the open arms of a love that’s waiting there,

And if somebody loves you, won’t they always love you?

I look in your eyes and I know that you still care for me.”

The chorus to one of my favorite Whitney Houston ballads. For years I grew up hearing her music transmitted through television, radio and more personally through my own cassette tapes & CDs. I can say, completely guaranteeing, that there will never be another singer to hold my attention, heart and devotion like Whitney did.

I grew up with music being my third parent, my first love? Hip hop but the R&B/Pop/Gospelgelic music of Ms. Houston attacked me and never let go. I fell in love with her voice. To me, falling in love means being placed in a space where you are safe; your heart is safe, your emotional stability is secure.

With her recent passing, I’ve gained and lost a lot. I lived unrealistically, thinking I was the only one that was in love with this woman’s voice and personality. I thought that God gave me her for myself; I was wrong.

God had placed Whitney Houston on this earth for everyone to fall in love with; I’ve finally gained that understanding.  I have matured. I spent the past 29 years on this earth with her voice paralleling my childhood; I am an alumnus of The Whitney Generation.

Now, with a less heavy heart, I will continue to play her music, watch her films and remind myself that, although I have to share her with the world, I have God to thank for placing this extraordinary angel in our life.

This is real life, this  is the life you’ve been given, stop complaining, strap up and troop it. It’s only as hard as you make it. I’ve had tons of hardships within the past 10 years but I’m still standing with a smile on my face, love in my heart, a mind full of wisdom and miles to go before I sleep. DON’T. GIVE. UP.

For every door that closes, there’s a key to open a new one. Live by these rules

Establish, Plan, Do.

Sometimes the smallest, most insignificant events in life can develop into something large, important and life-changing. Look for those moments and grab on to the possibilities.

Album Review of…”One Day It’ll All make Sense” Common

Released on September 30, 1997

This album was sick. I don’t know why it wasn’t talked about, maybe because everyone was blinded by Puff and them damn shiny suits around this time or maybe it was just one of those albums that were good at wood. It’s one of my inspirational albums for sure.

COMMON “One Day It’ll all make sense

I think No I.D. made his mark in production with this album. He became the most talked about-unheard producer.

“INVOCATION”
“Invisioning the here after, listening to steve wonder, on a quest for love like the proceed drummer” Love that line and a perfect way to jump off the album. That beat was sick

“REAL NIGGA QUOTES”
At first I didn’t like this beat but it grew on me, about a year later.

“Real Nigga quotes I tote, got some shit on the free but
This some shit that I wrote, legendary like The Goat
Who got game? Giving a quarter rest while I make these quarter notes
My album niggas was expectin’, now my quarter broke
Before it, I was sorta broke
Get the paper for the funnies, sports and the horoscope”

“RETROSPECT FOR LIFE”
This was/is my shit. One of the many reasons why I bought this album. I loved the video too. Not only because of the Stevie Wonder sample(Stevie doesn’t let just anyone sample his shit) but because of the deep words within it.

I mean, rhyming about abortion is a touchy and risky subject, but Common did it and Lauryn just made it even more better with her voice. But I would’ve loved to hear her spit a 16 on it from a woman’s point of view.

“GETTIN’ DOWN AT THE AMPHITHEATER”
Common and De La Soul = sick song!

I love the way No I.D. took that Gangbusters sample and just killed it(Way better than Alchemist did it recently).

“G.O.D.(Gaining One’s Definition)”
This is one of those Hip-hop/ballad tracks everyone was talking about back then. Cee-Lo killed it, but to be honest, I neveer knew what the fuck he was singing.

“HUNGRY”
Okay, when I heard this shit I went crazy. It lit a write bug in me. All you rappers on here know what I’m talking about. That one song/track that inspires you to crack that spiral notebook and just write page after page of 16 bars.

That sample is sick, I wish I knew where it came from. I’d steal that shit in a heartbeat…lol

Common killed this one, he had so many damn punchlines, he was in the zone.

“STOLEN MOMENTS pt.1”
Classic track. On some Slick Rick shit. I would’ve loved to hear Talib or Mos on this track. Plus the intro to it..I got some shit stolen from me, try an entire cd collection GONE!!!!!…I actually remember saying…”Man, niggas ain’t shit!”…lol

“STOLEN MOMENTS pt.2”
Love this too, great beat and Black Thought was perfect for it.

“REMINDING ME(Of self)”
Love this song. Makes me jump up and do something. Real positive. One of those spring time/summer tracks. Damn, Chantay Savage can blow.

Maybe one of the most memorable joints from the 90’s. Arguably & agreeably one of the best Hip Hop monster collabs.

Keith Murray, Prodigy, Fat Joe, Foxy Brown & LL Cool J.

It’s up in the air who had the best first. Keith might take that title, in my opinion. Joe after that…you know what….EVERYBODY laced that muthafucka. It’s definitely one of the best cipher joints.
